1. What does a “settler” represent in the general expansion of civilizations in history? Who do you think were the "settlers" in America?

A settler is someone that came from a different country to a new country to explore and to claim land for their country or for freedom and a better way of life. The Native Americans are the "original" settlers of America, but the European settlers are the ones who brought over the culture and way of life we still have today.
  1. Why start with a settler and not a warrior in the game?

If you were to start with a warrior, you would not be able to explore the land. Although a warrior can defend a city, they really have nothing to defend, so a settler needs to establish a city for a warrior to defend and fight for.

  1. What does the phrase "fog of war" mean in the game? What do you think is its meaning in real life?

In the game, the "fog of war" is the unexplored land that you know nothing about. The screen darkens and you can't see at all, which is probably how the settlers felt when they went to a new land, having no idea where to go or what to do, almost like traveling in the dark.
  1. The character known as a scout in the game explores the surrounding countryside. What are the equivalents of scouts in real life through out history?

The scouts were people who would bravely venture out into the unknown to see if the land ahead was safe to travel through. Or if there was danger close to the village, the scout would report back so the warriors could defend the village.

  1. What is the importance of cultural development in a civilization?

Cultural development is what makes a civilization close together because people might see eye to eye.
  1. Explain how the many characters created contribute to the growth of the civilization and not a single one.
The warrior is used for defense, the scout is used for exploring unexplored land, and the worker is used for building more things for our city. We need more people for our civilization because if we only have a worker we will have to one to defend us, and no one to explore more land for us.
  1. What is the growth evolution of a hut?

It can start as a hut, but when we get farther into the game we start to create a language and our buildings become more advanced.

Week 4 Questions

  1. What civilization did you choose and why?

We choose Egypt because we know from previous knowledge that their empire did well. Also they had a good empire structure such as they had found the wheel, agriculture, and they had war chariot.

  2. Are you leaning more towards defense or cultural development and growth?

We are leaning more towards a cultural development

  3. As you encountered other civilizations, did you establish trade or go to war? Was is the on going consequence of this decision?

Well, what we did was we established trade. We are not ready to go to war. The consequences are that we have not conquered anyone so they might take advantage of us and attack us.

  4. What type of government did your team decide to obtain? What were the choices? What are the differences between them all?

We tried to obtain a peaceful government. And we allow all religion to be in our town.

Our Plan

For this week we want to surround the colonists, by spreading out our men to cover more land. We also want to make allies, possibly with the native americans because they helped us in the French Indian War. We also want to build bases and ships, and recruit more lobster backs. Last we want to take over the colonists towns and cities ONE BY ONE!

So far, our plan is not really working unfortunately. The Colonists are taking over our land and killing our men. We have many ships, but they are not doing much. And even when we move to attack a Colonist, we lose! We have not made any allies yet, so maybe we still have a chance. WE ARE FAILING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION!
At the end of this week we have lost alot of our men. We also have lost a lot of land. Basicaly we are losing.

As of November 4th 2010, we want to win, but it seems nearly impossible! We want to out all our Loyalist soldiers in British cities for protection and use the left over soldiers to attack the Colonists. We also want to win more points by increasing culture and our military. We want to make use of our many ships and make peace with King Carlos.

We really don't have much progress, our plan was well-thought out, but it just didn't work. The Americans (colonists) have taken over a lot of our land, we want to get it back. We aren't exactly sure how we are going to do that, but every time we spread out our soldiers they end up getting killed. Our economy improved, but that did not help us with the war that much. We took over one of the colonists cities finally! We tried to make peace with King Carlos but it didn't work out and King Louis wanted nothing to do with us. This war seems like a lost cause right now.

Next week we want to defeat the colonists, unfortunetly we don't have any allies right now so we want to get some or maybe try to win the war alone. We need to attack and take over King Carlos of Spain and King Louis of France and of course the Colonists. But maybe we are biting off more than we can chew? However, allies may be able to help us.

As of November 12th 2010, our plan is to get more of our frigates and actually use them. We observed a technique where you shot someone who is on land from the water and we want to try it out. We are going to try to take down the smaller cities such as Albany and Fort Pitt. We want to disperse some of our British soldiers in our cities for protection because many of our cities got taken over. We want to try to get a new weapon, a cannon.

We got a dock because since our frigates are so valuable, the dock might help us. We also acquired a castle because we think it will help provide good defense against the colonists. We killed a colonist, but they also took over our fort. We sunk a colonist frigate as well as a Spain frigate. We dominate with our frigates in the water than we do on land with our soldiers. We are going to attack Boston but it will take a lot of time and effort. Taking over Boston will be a challenge, but IF we succeed it will really help us. We have fortified many of our men to prepare them for the Boston attack.

Next week, we want to take over Boston, Fort Pitt and Albany. We want to try to get more frigates because we dominate in the water as opposed to the land. We also want to build more defense in our British cities, we want to go beyond using regulars but use weapons and walls.

This week we have a very good plan. What we want to do is be very aggresive toward our enemies. We are planing to destroy all of their ships. We will also send our ships close to land and we will see if we can shoot at their towns. We will also send a lot of our regulars to every one of their towns. We have an advantage. Our advantage is that we have a lot of regulars. We plan to have at least two regulars per town. We need to protect our town, and our people! If we follow this plan I am sure we can be victorious.

So far our plan is working out fairly well. We have killed many of them. And our defense is amazing! But I am afraid that we might loose because George Washington has a lot of points. We just took one of their towns, but shortly after we did this, they took one of our towns. This is a lot harder then we thought it would be. Our ships are very far away from their ships. This is taking a lot time for our ships to get to theirs. Unfortunately the war is over and George Washington just had a Score Victory. We tried the best we could be we were just to far behind.

For next week we plan on being the Americans. We want to be them because of all of the allies they all have. It is hard to win a war while you are fighting three different countries. Next week we want to try to talk to the other countries and get them on our side. We will do this by trading with them and if their lucky we will even give them one of our towns. Hopefully next week we will be very successful.

As of December 7th 2010, we are starting a new game as the Americans since we lost as the British. We are hoping that since we will be the Americans this time we will have better luck with recruiting allies. We learned from mistakes when we were the British, so this time we will concentrate more on just conquering the British than protecting our cities.

"In 1775 the Colonists were fed up with the high British taxes and not having plausible reasons for such taxes. The Colonists want to establish a government that others will follow and model. The British may have the upper hand with their many resources from Europe and their stealthy army and navy. But the Colonist are willing to put a fight for their freedom, no matter the enemy. We plan on recruiting the French and Spanish to help us win this war."

So far, we are doing very well, we are allies with King Carlos and King Louis. We have taken over Boston and we are spreadiing along the coast and people are joingin us. We are just hopefully going to go at the same pace and prgress.

As of December 17th 2010, we are the Americans and we are winning! We plan to take over British cities, such as Montreal. We have already taken over Boston, so we are hoping that taking over other cities will be just as easy. We also want to take over For Pitt and since it is close to the border line, we are hoping it will help expand our land.

We captured York, but we have lost a lot soldiers and have traded gold for a world map with King Carlos, hoping to maybe smooth out our relationship with him and recruit him as our allie. France and Britain are now feuding, so that takes one more enemy off our list! We are also allies with King Louis XV and King Carlos III. We are currently one point behind King George III, which is very good.

We learned that cannons sound like a good idea to have in battle, but during our experience everyone has beat us when we used them. When we were the British, we dominated in the water with our powerful frigates, but when we were the Americans, we weren't so good. However, on land as the Americans we dominated. We won! *by two points*
